GREENSBORO, N.C. – (February 12, 2016) – The 50th Annual World Series of Asphalt got underway Friday night at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida, and Tyler Ankrum finished fourth.
Ankrum, 14, qualified second but after the field was inverted he ended up starting seventh. He had to work hard for the top five finish.
“The car was very good on short runs,” the talented youngster explained. “But once air pressures and heat came back up it would get very tight and I couldn’t hold it underneath anyone to pass. I road it out trying to compensate with what I had. I was able to make my way to fourth. I cannot thank my team and my sponsors enough. We’re off to a strong start this week!”
Ankrum has tasted victory in his NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock and has been very close with the Super Late Model. It is with the Super that he hopes to take the checkered flag and bring some Sunshine State winning swag back to his Greensboro, North Carolina home.
“We had some great tests in the last few weeks leading up to the World Series,” Tyler said. “We know how tough the competition is. I have complete faith in my team to give me a winning car. I’m ready to get that first win in a Super Late Model and I believe we can do it at here (at New Smyrna) if everything falls into place.”
Racing continues each night through February 20th at New Smyrna as this legendary short track Speedweeks series is run for the 50th time. Tyler is not unaware that some of the all-time greats have added World Series wins to their racing resumes.
“I am hungry to add my name to that list,” the focused youngster said. “I am excited to get the 2016 season started and I believe this is going to be an amazing year for our team. There is nothing I enjoy more than being in a race car and I’m very thankful to everyone who helps me to do that!”
Tyler and the team have several partners returning for 2016. Ion Shoot/Share, Modern Meat Company and K&N Filters are all back on board for the coming season.
