Ankrum Charges To 6th Place At Hickory In First Race With New Team

June 14, 2016

HUDSON, N.C. – (June 14, 2016) – California native Tyler Ankrum, 15, charged from deep in the field to finish sixth in his first CARS Tour race under the direction of Crew Chief Roger Johnson and the Performancenter Racing Warehouse-based team at Tri-County Motor Speedway in Hudson, N.C.

Starting 11th in the 100-lap Super Late Model portion of the Do The Dew 200, Ankrum fell back to 16th on the race’s initial start because someone in front of him failed to get up to speed and his entire row was forced to slow.

Gathering himself, the youngster began to pick his way toward the front.

“I followed (Raphael) Lassard for a while and let him make the holes,” Tyler said with a grin.  “I was interested in saving my tires, so doing that helped me gain some spots without having to really push the car that hard.”

Around lap 35, he guided his Ion Camera Shoot/Share No. 58 to the outside and methodically continued his march toward the front.

“I had hit the inside wall a bit one lap and whatever it did to the car, it made it a little tight.  We had a fast car in the beginning, but after I did that we weren’t quite as good. As the tires wore down, I just stayed on the outside and we had a nice run to sixth.”

After the race, the personable racer was pretty happy with how things went overall.

“I really couldn’t ask for much more out of our first race,” he said.  “Obviously we go to the track to win, but this was our first race together so sixth is not bad.  I can’t thank Roger and Clay and the whole team enough for believing in me and how hard they are working to get us to the point where we can run for wins.  I had a great time at the track and I really enjoyed working with everyone.  We’re running the PASS South race at Hickory this weekend. It would be fun to get my first super late model win at the same track where I got my first NASCAR late model win last year.”
